  • Wool and SDN carpets each have positives and negatives. Wool is a natural product while synthetics are manufactured from man-made chemicals. Wool is considered to be the superior fibre for high quality domestic and commercial installations. It is also biodegradable and a renewable resource. However, with the advances in carpet manufacturing and technology both types of carpet are considered high quality and well made. Choosing the right fibre for you will depend on your needs and requirements and here at Allfloors we are here to help you make the correct decision.

  • Loop: Loop carpet is when the carpet pile is looped. There are a number of different loop options - Level loop has uniform height loops, High-low loop has a mixture of high and lower loops and Multi-level loop features different height loops to create a sculptured look. Loop pile carpet is hard wearing and does not suffer from tracking.

Plush: Plush carpet is another name for cut pile. This pile is achieved by cutting the tops of the loops so that the carpet fibres stand upright. Plush carpets have an even smooth surface which adds an luxurious feel and look. However due to the nature of the pile, they will suffer from tracking and can also be affected by shading or flattening.

Twist: Twist piles are twisted cut piles where the yarn is highly twisted and set, creating a textured look carpet. This texture minimises tracking, shading and fluffing.

  • As a general rule, surface pile appearance changes may be noticed first with the cut pile rather than the loop pile construction. This relates to the style of texture rather than the fibre or quality of the carpet. This, however, does not mean that loop pile carpet is a better overall performing carpet than a cut pile carpet when all aspects are taken into consideration.

One of our Sales Consultants will go through all the carpet options with you and recommend the best option for your needs.

  • Permanent pile reversal is also known as "shading", "puddling" or "watermarking". It refers to the lighter or darker patches that may appear on a carpet due to the permanent bending of the carpet pile fibres which then reflect light differently. Once this happens, it cannot be reversed.

It can occur in all cut pile carpets, particularly plush pile, in any fibre and is more apparent in plain, solid coloured carpets. The extent to which this occurs cannot be predicted or prevented. It is not a carpet fault or defect but a natural occurrence and does not affect the wear or durability of the carpet.

  • A new wool carpet can create a large amount of fluff. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, it is just a result of wool being a natural fibre. New wool carpet will require regular vacuuming and after a while you will notice that this fluffing will diminish. Make sure that you use a good suction head vacuum with a strong suction. Carpet manufacturers recommend this range Sebo particularly for wool loop pile carpets.

  • Like with everything, carpet will look better and last longer with routine maintenance.

    • Vacuum carpet at least once a week and more often if needed.

  • Fading can occur over time with any carpet. Fading is a character of the dye type and depth of shade and can occur irrespective of fibre type. If you are concerned with fading, external shading devices provide the most benefit, but glass treatments and interior shading devices will also help reduce the effects of direct sunlight.

  • After initial installation of your vinyl flooring it is recommended that you do not walk on it for 24 hours to allow the floor to settle after which you should then give the floor a good vacuum or sweep to remove any dirt or grit to prevent scratching the floor.

In order to keep your vinyl floor looking good you should clean it regularly. This means sweeping or vacuuming the floor to remove dirt and dust. Then you need to mop your floor using a clean damp mop and an approved vinyl cleaning solution if required. It is important to ensure that you wring the mop fully before using. If you do spill any liquid on the floor, then mop this up immediately and allow the floor to dry fully.

Some recommendations for looking after your vinyl flooring:

    • Use felt pad protectors on furniture and chair legs to prevent scratching

    • Avoid wearing high heels

    • Protect floors from extreme temperatures by using blinds and shades on windows and doors
